I have a little maltese male and his hair is going out of control. It's really long and he's like a walking mop.

I was wondering what I could buy to cut his hair?

I don't want to go to a dog salon because he barks like crazy around strangers and nothing can stop him.

A muzzle would stop him from barking, and groomers are more then happy to use them if it means they will be able to do a better job. It is not cruel, or inhumane, it is necessary to get the job done.

If you've never groomed a dog before, especially such a tiny one, I wouldn't recommend doing this on your own.

You might want to consider socializing him more around strangers, or doing obedience training if even YOU can't stop him from barking.

I have a shi tzu, and I can't take him to the groomers either (he goes nUtS!); I use child-sized scissors to cut his hair. I like his hair short, so I cut it sort of like when I used to cut my barbie's hair, just as even as possible. Since it looks like a mop any way, it is VERY hard to mess up!

My mom has a female Maltese. She's also a groomer. She just uses different types of scissors for grooming. Not the normal household scissors.

She also has a small electric trimmer to get the smaller areas like the pads of her feet, face, ears and her 'girl' area.

If you don't know what your doing i recommend not doing this on your own!! I work at a groomers! Take him to a good groomers, that will let you stay with him the whole time if you want!! It can be dangerous for you to give him his hair cut if you don't know what your doing!

It sounds like he needs some more training, and then take him to the groomers. You can use regular haircutting scissors in the meantime - you want the haircutting type because they are extra sharp and won't pull his hair while you cut it.

i also have a male maltese. i haven't tried bringing him to the salon coz he really barks at other people specially when he knows that people will touch him..

when i groom him, i just use scissors, small ones. in this way, i can avoid hurting him and myself. since dogs, has the tendency to move here and there, it can avoid any accident.

also if you are cutting your dog's hair for the first time, try to bathe him first, then feed him. afterwards, try to talk with your dog. im sure he will listen to you. =)

Proffesinal groomers are your best bet, just get a muzzle and it wont be a proablem, he needs socialazation time!

People say this all the time my dog is so bad when I try to bathe her.... Well I got some news for you like kids dogs do better when there owner is not around....My neighbors Yorkie is a mouth he barks at people all the time he will stand at the end of the driveway and bark bark bark he will even run from me... When she brings him in for his grooming wow different dog he gives me kisses and he such a doll to work with...Give it a chance you may just be surprised.
