Why do people cut their little girls hair so very short?

i have seen little girls between 5-10 with hair cuts made for little boys. Why do parents do this. it makes you daughters look like your sons. There are some cases where the child is sick and in fall out but not in all cases. What is the point, why not let their hair grow out?

Have you ever had to sit for 45 min and comb the tangles out of an active girls hair?? if they are young and not able to do it themselves, even the de-tangling products do not help much. My drama queen of a daughter would scream like i was beating her as i combed out her hair. i would brush it all day long and she would still get knots in her hair, it was very fine. I gave up and gave her a short pixie cut until she was old enough to do her own hair.

Well, I have short hair most of the time. The reason my mother did not want me to grow my hair long is because when the hair is long I had to tie my hair up. By tying the hair up, I will be straining the nerves on my head and it will cause me headache - in the long term. Imagine yourself being pulled by the hair every time, isn't that painful? If it is painful for you, imagine it on a little girl.

Since my mother did not want me to strain my head, she preferred to had my hair cut off. Now, I still have my hair short mostly because it suits my face. If my face suits a long hair style, why not? but I still agree with my mother about having short hair during childhood.

I have 2 daughters and I love doing their hair! I mean, how hard is it??? Really, putting a pretty head band or something takes no time or effort at all...

I often find that parents who do this are really old-fashioned and opposed to anything 'girly'. I let my girls wear nail polish and some parents find this hard to deal with!

MOST girls like to look 'pretty'. What is wrong with that? Nothing.

And for those who claim 'tangles and knots' you can buy hair spray in conditioner from the supermarket to deal with that.

I hate to say it, but EVERY mother I know who does this to their daughters usually has 'issues' of some kind.

Part of having a girl, is allowing her to express herself and celebrate her 'femaleness'.

Do they wish they'd had a boy? I dont know, but you have raised a very valid issue.

And also, I have had many hair styles in my time, and it is much HARDER to 'do' short hair! So they cannot use that as their excuse!

Children begin to develop opinions at the age of 2. I see nothing wrong with cutting their hair short if they insist that they want it to be a certain way.

I'm not saying let a 5 or 10 year old decide everything in the household, but harmless decisions like their hair or choosing between 3 outfits for the day is fine. It gives them a sense of accomplishment and will make it easier for them to continue to make decisions as they get older and put into different social settings.

Besides, I hope my daughter will carve her own path and not follow a group.

I've seen some really cute little girls with short hair. Sometimes it is just cuter than long hair. I've seen many girls with long hair where it looks stringy and not healthy at all. I can't understand mothers who let their daughters walk around as if they've never seen a brush. My mom always used to say, "It doesn't matter how nice your clothes are or how well you're put together. If you're hair looks scraggly then you look scraggly." She is right. I've seen little girls wearing the cutest outfits but then they have a rats nest for hair and it just makes them look like they're not taken care of.

When I was 9 my mom had my hair cut off. I was such a tom boy and refused to take care of my hair. My mom got tired of dealing with it so she had it all cut off. I didn't care because it was just hair. AND I got so many compliments because of it. Everyone thought it was so cute. No one ever thought I was a boy.

And some people have very fine hair and when it gets long it looks flat and stringy. Mine is like that. I wear mine down to my shoulders but if I let it get any longer it has no body and looks flat no matter what I do. It was that way when I was a kid so I thank my mom for keeping it short and healthy looking.

I kept my daughter's hair long for a very long time. It was a battle every single day before school to get a brush through it. She would cry instantly at the thought of brushing her hair. She wanted a short cut and I let her pick it (with some guidance). Sometimes it is okay to be an individual or to let your kids be an individual. Telling them they have to do something because that is what everybody else is doing is not sending a very good message for the future when it later will be regarding something that really does matter - like drugs. It's just a hair cut and it will grow back. My daughter's hair is long again now - she is 9. I will say, that I prefer it long. I have always had long hair and I like it better for a girl too. A lot of women/girls have short hair and it is preference. Magazines and commercialism say that women should be thin too - but I don't have my daughter on a strict diet to make sure she conforms to society and their expectations.

I'll tell you why my parents did it with my sisters and I-little girls hair gets so tangled!! You wouldn't believe how tangled it gets; practically matted overnight. Having the hair short keeps it neat and easy to take care of!!!

Honestly I think that because the girls hair gets tangled and gum gets stuck in the hair bed head and the such, some parentss have just become too lazy to brush all that hair or sit there getting the gum out etc. Some parents are also working alot and do not have the time but if u do not have time to fix their hair u rnt spending enough tie with them in general LOL...
