Is it worth to have my hair cut to be accepted in a job?

Yesterday, the interviewer spent 30 minuted trying to convince me to have my hair cut (it was pony tail tied) to get accepted in the job, Especially that it is not common in my community and the job is about sales engineering.

I personally accept all people the way they are and never judge them by their looks and expect from them the same. But in sales career i should not offend clients.

Is it worth to do such a permanent change in your self for such career?

Gentlemen, Is it an obligation in your country to have your hair cut for a career in sales, engineering, tele-marketing, IT, HR or any field?

IN England it is not an obligation but is generally the trend....

Things like tele-marketing or non-face to face roles are not too bad, but bosses generally do not like the long hair look on staff

I have employed guys with long hair before, I don't give a crap myself, but I know other employers that will not accept it (they would never admit it, but they would give the job to someone else)

Is it worth to have my hair cut to be accepted in a job?

Hair lenght should matter in a sales job so long as you keep it clean and it's not greasy and crawling with things I mean this is the year 2006 not the year 1956. Unfortuantly you can't change some people's opinions. I don't think it's worth it.

My gut feeling tells me you are not going to enjoy working for this company, first the hair, then ......

It's up to you!! What do you want more?? The job or your hair???

Anjali is right. It depends on how important the job is to you. I myself had to slightly alter my appearance to get an important job, as I knew the interviewers were conservative. For me, it was worth it, and I am not thought of less by anyone else because of it.

Is it worth to have my hair cut to be accepted in a job?

depends on how much you want the job-- your ability to do the job, shouldn't depend on your looks.

not an obligation necessarily in our country, but companies reserve the right to ask people to cut their hair in order to get a job. Most companies are cool about it, some are probably not as cool. The answer depends on the importance of your hair over the importance of this particular job to you. My personal answer is, assuming I had limited options, I would get my hair cut. Sometimes you just have to play the game.

The question to you is do you really want this job, if you do then cut it. and its not the end of the world hair will grow back.If your hair is more important to you then look for another job.

Good luck.

I am from Pakistan and no its not an obligation here, but its necessary as well. 1st of all for the sake of being presentable, because you are in a formal environment, then 2nd these sacrifices could be made in order to have a successful career, 3rd when you are in sales, you have to meet people of different backgrounds, customs and cultures, esp. when you travel to different countries. What is fashionable in one town, city or country might not be too appreciated in another. Remember in sales you have to follow the motto 閳ユゾhe Customer is always right閳? so I understand you might value your hair a lot, I did as well, but it閳ユ獨 a very small sacrifice compared to a good career. And if you are interested in sales, the more reason for you to adopt. Btw, I am in sales as well. t.c.

good thing indeed.

If you cut your hair and get the job what's going to be asked of you next? Think about that. The way you have your hair doesn't offend anyone. This shouldn't be acceptable. On the other hand of course if your desperate to get the job do it. It's your choice.

I used to have long hair while I was a student. All the jobs I did then were part time and there was not a problem, but I knew one day I would have to get rid of the long hair. In the end I became self employed and cut it short out of choice. When you have short, smart hair you definitely get taken more seriously. Wearing a shirt and tie can also help.

I have the same view about not judging on appearances (but chavs are an exception), but other people are very quick to judge and make assumptions. If this is a long steady career with prospects you may have to make the sacrifice.
